Welcome to Garden Perennials...the daylily and perennial plant nursery of Gail Korn in Wayne, Nebraska.

2013--Our 31st Year

We have noticed over time that weather that is good for plants is not necessarily pleasant for people. Under those circumstances, it’s a wonder that so many of us chose gardening as a past time. The good thing is that there is plenty of variety in the weather to go around, so whatever the weather brings us, it suits somebody.

We became interested in weatherlore many years ago. Weatherlore consists of observations that people have made on the weather over a long period of time, and many of these bits of wisdom are passed down through generations..

A neighbor told us that the old Indians used to say that when snakes head for high ground, it means that it will rain sometime in the next 2 or 3 days. We’ve paid attention to that sign ever since, and the snakes are right! But they don’t know how much rain there will be. Even a few drops makes them right.  Other critters seem to foretell future weather too. If ant hills are high in July, the winter will be snowy. Squirrels gathering nuts in a flurry will cause snow to gather in a hurry. Weather itself offers clues.

When the leaves fall early, fall and winter will be mild; when leaves fall late, winter will be severe. A high water level in the creeks in the fall foretell a mild winter. A warm October means a cold February. If a cold August follows a hot July, it foretells a winter hard and dry.  A tough winter is ahead if corn husks are thick and tight, apple skins are tough, birds migrate early, squirrels tails are very bushy, berries and nuts are plentiful, and bees build their nests high in the trees. It’s all fascinating.

Drought is almost a perennial condition in Nebraska, so you won’t find plants that need to be kept constantly moist. Our average rainfall is 27”. But if you need plants for dry shade, we’ve found some excellent choices. These can be grown successfully under trees with very thirsty roots, such as maples and lindens.

We are sometimes asked about the size of our plants. We send plants that we would be tickled pink to receive ourselves. We pot them here for garden visitors, and most require a 1 gallon pot or larger. For the price, they are a real bargain! Our aim is to get you to try our plants, and then we do everything we know how to do to entice you to become regular customers. We know that will happen only if we send you plants that survive, thrive, and bring you pleasure. Our plants are always outdoors. We think that is why customers tell us that the plants they get from us survive transplanting with little if any trouble. We firmly believe that perennial plants belong outside!
